Generally when one refers to a person as having a "guarded" demeanour it is taken up in the negative sense . . . Most often than not on the premise that something bad must have happened to said person for them to be perceptibly guarded. This is a valid stance to take, as it is well known that one can learn a great deal about someone simply by observing teir bahaviour and interactions with others. Also more often than not the assumption is based on countless precedents, reinforcing the notion that being guarded comes about as a consequence of past circumstances.
Not refusing to aknowledge the above notion . . . nature might elicit a different perpective on being guarded.
Have you ever happened upon a cave while walking along the coast? At first you might not perceive it as a cave, rather a curious hole in the rocky landscape. You walk on without giving the missing piece of earth another thought . . . not until days later when you are walking along the beach next to the rock face, at low tide of course ;) This is where you discover a natural cave, formed as a result of the oscillating sea, the driving wind, underground water eroding the rock until it eventually gives way to natures whims.
When you enter the cave, you notice a shaft of light piercing through the roof of the cave. That shaft of light illuminating this secret place is the missing piece of earth you notices only a few days before. To find a place like this, even more, to be honoured enough to be shown this secret place; you can`t help but being overwhelmed by a sense of protection towards the space. To guard it from any other human encounter. Time has no authority here in this cave, within it lies the treasures brought in with the tides of the sea.The colours, the textures, the smells and sounds of lifetimes passed haunt the air in this cave. Then it dawns on you . . . This cave has been here perhaps since the beginning of time. Indigenous people has worshipped here, animals have taken shelter here and the ocean has never not been welcome here. You are not the first to bear witness to this wonder, nor will you be the last.
You vaguely remember your high school geography teacher explaining the origin of the word "cave" to you; originating from the Latin word 'cavere" which means "beware". You realise that even though this cave is open to any and all, you still get the sense that it is gaurded, even more so the objects and the life within it has the opportunity to remain unique, beautiful and untouched. As if this "space" is needed to nourish the ecosystem, until it is ready to be unveiled . . . only then will the tide take it out to the open waters.
Nature teach us that being guarded is necessary, it allows for the delicate to become strong, the timid to find voice, the time for beauty to be respected and understood. Being guarded does not mean "inaccessible" as seen with the cave . . . no one, no thing is barred from entering . . . only the one who does find it, who seeks and ventures further, takes the risk, finds it and all it`s wonders.
Guard your convictions, your instincts and most importantly your thoughts, heart and judgements until that time where it can go out in the world with respect, understanding and an anfallible beauty.
